According to Sport, Everton are willing to pay between €25m-€30m in order to land Andre Gomes from Barcelona on a permanent basis, although it is believed that one other club are also interested in the midfielder’s services.
What’s the word, then?
Well, since arriving at Goodison Park on loan from the Spanish champions back in the summer, Gomes has impressed in an Everton shirt with some assured performances in the middle of the park alongside Idrissa Gueye.
It was previously reported that Barcelona were looking to land around €40m for the Portuguese international, who cost them €35m when they signed him from Valencia back in 2016.
In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…
However, as aforesaid, the Toffees are only willing to pay between €25m-€30m for the 25-year-old, which would be a decent investment given his age as well as his ability.
End the scatter-gun approach and pay the money
In recent years, it wouldn’t be unjust to say that Everton have been somewhat of a laughing stock in the transfer market.
Big money deals for players such as Davy Klaassen and Morgan Schneiderlin, who cost £23.6m and £20m respectively, have backfired spectacularly with neither man heavily involved in the first team – Klaassen is out on loan with Werder Bremen, whilst Schneiderlin has made just six league starts this season.
With those two transfers in mind, along with peculiar swoops for Cuco Martina and Sandro Ramirez in the 2017 summer window, the Toffees need to be more refined and assured in the market, something that they most certainly would be if they spent big on Gomes.
Yes, he would cost a fair bit, and if Barcelona reject any potential offers between the aforementioned price bracket that Everton have reportedly set, then Marco Silva and Marcel Brands will need to bite the bullet and pay the big bucks for guaranteed quality.
Enough chancing in the market. Now the Merseysiders have a proven player of real pedigree in their hands, they mustn’t let him slip away.
