Jurgen Klopp should aim to bolster his creative options in midfield when the January transfer window opens.
The German is yet to source a replacement for Philippe Coutinho who departed for Barcelona back in January. Nabil Fekir was believed to be the man to inject creativity back into the Liverpool engine room, but the transfer failed at the final hour due to concerns over the Frenchman’s long-term fitness. Ultimately, Klopp decided he was happy with his options in midfield.
With Adam Lallana struggling for fitness as well as form and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still sidelined, the German would be wise to search for an attacking midfielder when business reopens. Liverpool have looked void at creativity at times, forcing Roberto Firmino into a deeper attacking midfield role.
One man Klopp could lure to Anfield is Celta Vigo starlet – Brais Mendez. Valued at just £5.4m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old made his breakthrough in the first-team last season but was still finding his feet in Spain’s top tier. Now into his second full season, Mendez has been one of the standout stars in La Liga and was rewarded with his first call-up to the senior Spain national team.
Mendez has been in fine form in front of goal, with three goals and two assists in just nine La Liga appearances so far. His creativity would blend perfectly with Naby Keita in the Liverpool midfield with the youngster averaged 2.1 key passes per game so far this season (WhoScored). Still young and developing with every game, working in a squad of Liverpool’s quality under a manager like Klopp could do wonders for his development.
Liverpool could find their next Spanish superstar in January.
