After finishing second in the Scottish Premier League last season, Steven Gerrard and co will be hoping that they can go one better in the next campaign. To do so, some new signings would not go amiss. But who could join the Gers before the Scottish transfer window shuts on September 2nd? We take a look at five players who could potentially move to Ibrox before that date.
Daniel Sturridge left Liverpool at the start of the month and, as of yet, he has not found a club where he can continue his career. There have been several clubs linked to the 29-year-old by Fotomac (via Sport Witness) though, including Rangers. Fenerbahce and Old Firm rivals Celtic are believed to be eyeing the former Bolton and Chelsea forward as well. Signing a player who has over 100 career goals and has played at the highest level would be a coup.
Ryan Kent was a regular for Gerrard last season but has since returned to parent Liverpool club following the end of his loan spell. Rangers are very interested in taking the 22-year-old back north of the border as they look to close the gap to the Bhoys in the league, with the Gers boss reportedly desperate to see him return. However, the winger was included in the Reds’ pre-season tour of the US, so a deal is unlikely to be completed soon. But with so much talent ahead of him in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, a move may be the best outcome for all parties.
With Alfredo Morelos continually linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer, a new striker may be needed at Rangers. One potential arrival who has been targeted is Bolton forward Josh Magennis. The Lancashire club’s problems have been well documented and the 28-year-old has asked for help from the PFA in an attempt to escape the former Premier League outfit. A departure from the cash-strapped club looks likely this summer, and there is still time for Rangers to complete a potential deal.
Rangers are not just looking to boost their forward line though. The defence has also been looked at, and the club have their eyes on Martin Olsson in an attempt to improve it. Last month, the Scottish outfit were one of two clubs, the other being Nottingham Forest, who were said to have held talks with the Sweden international in regards to a move. He is currently a free agent having recently left Swansea City, so a switch to Ibrox would not be too complicated and would not require Rangers to pay a hefty transfer fee.
We end the list of Rangers’ potential new signings with another forward. Kemar Roofe was one of Leeds United’s best players last season as they came close to promotion to the Premier League. It has been reported that the Glasgow-based outfit have targeted Roofe to replace Alfredo Morelos should he leave Ibrox this summer. The 26-year-old is said to have been offered a huge contract by the 54-time Scottish champions, which may be enough to convince him to make the switch.
